เป็นคำกริยาช่วยคำกริยาหลัก ได้แก่ do, be, และ have หน้าที่ของคำกริยาประเภทนี้มีดังต่อไปนี้
– ใช้ประกอบคำกริยาแท้ของประโยคคำถามหรือประโยคปฏิเสธ พร้อมทั้งตอบคำถามแบบสั้น
– ใช้ประกอบคำกริยาแท้ของประโยคใน tense ต่างๆ ได้แก่ present continuous, present perfect
– ใช้ประกอบคำกริยาใน passive voice (BE + V3)
